A desiccant dehumidifier is a type of dehumidifier that uses a desiccant material to remove moisture from the air. Unlike refrigerative dehumidifiers, which use a cooling mechanism, desiccant dehumidifiers operate on the principle of adsorption.
The desiccant material, typically made of substances like silica gel or zeolite, has a high affinity for water vapor. When air is passed over the desiccant, the moisture in the air is adsorbed by the material, effectively reducing the humidity level. The desiccant material can then be regenerated to remove the accumulated moisture and make it ready for the next cycle.
There are two common types of desiccant dehumidifiers:
  1. Desiccant Wheel Dehumidifiers: These dehumidifiers use a rotating wheel made of the desiccant material. The wheel rotates between the process air stream and a regeneration stream. When the wheel is in the process air stream, moisture is adsorbed from the air. Then, as the wheel moves into the regeneration stream, a heat source, such as an electric heater, is used to warm the desiccant material and release the moisture into the air, effectively drying the desiccant for the next cycle.
  2. Desiccant Rotor Dehumidifiers: These dehumidifiers use a rotor coated with the desiccant material. The rotor spins continuously, and a portion of the rotor is exposed to the incoming air while another portion is exposed to a regeneration source. The moisture is adsorbed from the air as it passes over the desiccant-coated section, and then the regeneration source, such as a heater, is used to dry the desiccant section.
Desiccant dehumidifiers are often used in applications where low humidity levels are required, or where operating temperatures are low, as they are more effective than refrigerative dehumidifiers in colder conditions. They are commonly used in industrial settings, laboratories, storage areas, and in some residential applications.
It's worth noting that desiccant dehumidifiers typically consume more energy compared to refrigerative dehumidifiers, so they may not be the most energy-efficient option in all cases. The choice of dehumidifier depends on factors such as the specific requirements of the environment, humidity levels, temperature, and energy efficiency considerations.
